Swanville Athletic Association

In the heart of Swanville, a small town facing the imminent closure of its school in years past, a group of dedicated individuals rose to the occasion. The Swanville Athletic Boosters (SAB), established a decade ago, have been selected as the winner of the Crow Wing Power Commitment to Community Award for their remarkable efforts in transforming their community.

The catalyst for SAB's formation was the school district's financial crisis, leaving athletic facilities in disrepair. Despite the school receiving a generous 15-acre donation from the Jennie-O Turkey store, the land remained undeveloped. SAB took charge, funding the construction of two softball fields, a practice football field, and a running track – the now-famed "Jennie-O Turkey Store Fields."

SAB's contributions extended beyond the sports complex. The organization eliminated concerns about school closure, allowing the district to allocate funds elsewhere. Youth athletic participation soared, evident in the flourishing baseball program. Community-wide support for softball and baseball tournaments further solidified Swanville's unity. The fields also brought gender equity, providing dedicated spaces for girls' softball, and fostering newfound interest.

While the school district and students are primary beneficiaries, the entire community thrives. Local businesses along Swanville's main street experience increased activity during sporting events, generating more jobs and economic stability. SAB's initiatives instilled a renewed sense of pride, transforming Swanville into a competitive force in its athletic conference.

SAB's leadership demonstrated vision and determination. In a short span, they changed the community landscape, fostering a volunteer spirit and transforming Swanville parents from complacency to activism. The organization's mission to promote amateur athletics and enhance the quality of life has become a rallying cry for community involvement.

Operating as a nonprofit, SAB used its resources judiciously. Through legal fundraising avenues, such as donations and charitable gaming, the organization built and improved athletic facilities, paid entry fees for tournaments and invested in the development of future athletes. SAB's goal-oriented approach and relentless fundraising efforts showcase their commitment to community advancement.

SAB's positive influence spans a decade, with formal incorporation occurring seven years ago. In this time, Swanville witnessed a transformation from a community facing closure to one with thriving athletic facilities and a palpable volunteer spirit.

SAB maintains a constant presence at local events, donning neon "SAB" shirts that signify their willingness to help. With an active Facebook page and regular updates in the community newsletter, the "Swanville Flyer," SAB ensures effective communication of their efforts, engaging the community in upcoming volunteer opportunities.

The Swanville Athletic Boosters' tireless dedication to community betterment, evident in the creation of the Jennie-O Turkey Store Fields and various other initiatives, has rightfully earned them the local 2023 Crow Wing Power Commitment to Community Award and a berth into the state-wide Commitment to Community contest for a chance at an additional $2,000. Local Touchstone Energy Cooperative winners will compete for the statewide Touchstone Energy Award at the Minnesota Rural Electric Annual Conference in 2024. Their transformative leadership, wise resource utilization, and a decade of positive influence make them a beacon of inspiration for small communities striving for progress.
