Important Storm Safety Tips
Safety is paramount during and after a storm. Please adhere to the following guidelines to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you:
- Stay away from downed power lines: Always assume they are energized and dangerous.
- Do not drive over downed power lines.
- Treat all fallen wires and anything touching them as though they are energized.
- Allow linemen to work safely: Keep a safe distance from their trucks and equipment.
Steps to Take During a Power Outage
- Report your outage immediately: Do not assume your neighbors have already reported it. Call or text ‘OUT’ to 800-648-9401.
- Avoid hazards: Stay clear of downed power lines, flooded areas, and debris. Treat all fallen wires and anything touching them as though they are energized.
- Turn off appliances: This includes your furnace, air conditioner, water heater, and water pump. Leave one lamp on to signal when power is restored and to avoid a circuit overload.
- Preserve your food: Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed. A fully loaded freezer can keep food frozen for approximately 36-48 hours, while a half-full freezer can maintain it for about 24 hours. Use a cooler with ice for refrigerated items.
- Operate generators safely: Never use a generator inside your home or in enclosed spaces such as a garage.
- Stay informed: Use a battery-operated radio to listen to local news and weather updates. Follow Crow Wing Power on Facebook for outage updates.
Preparing for Future Power Outages
Being prepared for power outages is crucial, especially during storm seasons. Here are some essential items and tips to have on hand:
- Water and Non-Perishable Food: Store a three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and ready-to-eat food items like canned goods, energy bars, and dried fruits.
- Lighting and Communication: Keep extra battery charging packs and chargers in your emergency kit to stay connected.
- Personal Hygiene Items: Include hand sanitizers and wet wipes to maintain hygiene during an outage.
- Emergency Contacts: Print a list of local emergency numbers, medical facilities, and community resources and place it in your kit.
- Special Needs Consideration: Ensure your emergency kit includes items specific to the needs of infants, elderly individuals, and pets.
Stay Safe and Prepared
We urge all members to stay safe and follow these guidelines during this time. Crow Wing Power is committed to restoring power and ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
