We want to address recent questions from members about the United States' relationship with Canada and the tariff agreement, particularly regarding potential impacts on energy supply and rates.
Crow Wing Power has been in communication with our wholesale power provider, Basin Electric located in North Dakota, to stay informed on this situation.
Basin Electric has assured us that they do not have direct relationships with the entity in Ontario that recently made statements about restricting power to the United States. Additionally, as part of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), they work within a regional transmission network that ensures energy reliability across multiple states. In 2024, less than 1% of MISO’s total energy was supplied via Canadian imports, with less than half of that coming from Ontario. MISO routinely manages power fluctuations of this scale and maintains reliability across its footprint, so they do not anticipate any disruptions or significant impacts on members.
This remains a fluid situation, and we will continue to monitor developments. Crow Wing Power is also a member of the Minnesota Rural Electric Association and the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, both of which have dedicated government affairs teams advocating for sound energy policy at the local, state, and national levels.
We will continue to monitor the situation and keep members informed.
*Minnesota is part of Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). MISO manages the regional transmission network that spans several states and part of Canada to ensure energy reliability.
